Serve Together

We are a group of Buena Vista University students, faculty, and alumni traveling to Costa Rica for a meaningful mix of volunteering and tourism — also known as voluntouring.

During our trip, we’ll teach English at a rural elementary school, volunteer at an animal rescue center, and explore Costa Rica’s culture, communities, and environmental efforts.

Follow along as we serve, learn, travel, and grow together in one of the world’s most beautiful and biodiverse countries.

A weathered wooden sign reading “Buena Vista University Costa Rica Voluntourism” in clean, modern lettering, mounted on a textured bamboo wall. Around it, lush tropical plants with broad, glossy green leaves and a few vibrant red heliconia flowers create a natural frame. Soft, diffused morning light filters through unseen canopy above, casting dappled highlights on the sign’s grain and gentle shadows on the wall. Photographed at eye level with a centered, slightly wide composition and shallow depth of field so the sign is crisp while the foliage softly blurs. The mood is welcoming, professional, and adventurous, with photographic realism and rich, natural colors suited for a university travel blog header image.
A sturdy, earth-toned hiking backpack resting on a smooth river rock beside a clear Costa Rican mountain stream. The backpack is detailed with neatly organized notebooks, a stainless steel water bottle, a small field guide with a colorful bird illustration, and a camera partially visible in an open pocket. Moss-covered stones and dense emerald foliage surround the scene. Soft overcast light from above creates even, flattering illumination with subtle reflections on the water’s surface. Captured from a slightly elevated angle using the rule of thirds, the backpack in sharp focus while the background gradually blurs, conveying a calm, purposeful, and exploratory atmosphere in realistic photographic style.

Why We Volunteer Abroad

We volunteer abroad because we believe learning is most meaningful when it leads to action. At Buena Vista University, the spirit of Beavers Build reminds us that we are called to create, contribute, and make a positive difference wherever we go. Education for Service means using our knowledge, skills, and compassion to serve others, not just in our own communities, but around the world.

Through this experience in Costa Rica, we are building connections across cultures, supporting local communities, and growing as students, professionals, and global citizens. Volunteering abroad challenges us to listen, learn, and serve with humility. It allows us to put BVU’s values into practice by combining education, meaningful service, and hands-on engagement in a way that can shape both our lives and the lives of others.

Daily reflections from our Costa Rica service adventure.

A carefully arranged volunteer work station in a modest Costa Rican community center: a long wooden table with visible grain and minor scuffs, topped with labeled cardboard boxes of donations, neatly stacked school notebooks, colored pencils in recycled jars, and a bilingual clipboard checklist. In the background, a chalkboard map of Costa Rica is slightly out of focus, with simple, hand-drawn regions. Warm late-afternoon sunlight enters from a side window, casting elongated, soft-edged shadows and creating a golden glow on the tabletop. Photographed at eye level with balanced composition and moderate depth of field, the image feels organized, purposeful, and respectful, embodying professional photographic realism suited to a voluntourism blog.
An overhead view of a rustic wooden dining table in a Costa Rican lodge, beautifully set for a group meal after a day of volunteering. Colorful ceramic plates hold traditional dishes like rice, beans, grilled vegetables, and sliced tropical fruit, with visible textures and vibrant hues. Reusable metal water bottles and simple glass pitchers of infused water are arranged between woven placemats. A few small vases with local flowers add organic accents. Warm pendant lights above cast a soft, inviting glow, creating gentle highlights on the food and subtle shadows around the tableware. The mood is communal, reflective, and celebratory, captured in sharp, photographic realism with a clean, top-down composition ideal for illustrating shared experiences.
A close-up, eye-level shot of a small sapling freshly planted in rich, dark soil at the edge of a Costa Rican rainforest. The young tree has delicate, bright green leaves still speckled with droplets of water, and a simple wooden marker with handwritten species name stands beside it. The background shows softly blurred layers of dense jungle foliage and hints of distant mist. Soft, diffused morning light filters through the canopy, creating gentle rim lighting on the leaves and subtle texture in the soil. The atmosphere is hopeful, serene, and quietly triumphant, rendered in natural, photographic realism with a shallow depth of field to emphasize impact and growth.
